The Director-General attended the formal session of the UN Chief Executives Board (CEB) spring session which opened today in Madrid.
Prior to that, the Director-General co-chaired with the Executive Director of United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), in the presence of UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, a special working meeting on the review of the UN Chief Executives Board mechanisms.
During the formal session, participants discussed the reports of the high-level committees on programmes, management and development which were endorsed after a fruitful discussion. This debate was then followed by an exchange on water issues during which the Director-general underlined the excellent cooperation between UN agencies in the UN-Water framework and recalled that UNESCO is the lead agency for the 2013 International Year of Water Cooperation.
“It is essential to note that international water cooperation touches not only upon science and environment but it goes well beyond to encompass the wellbeing of humanity, human rights and human dignity,” said the Director-General. She highlighted that “it is therefore essential to carry forward this topic into the post-2015 development agenda”.
Finally, the CEB had an in-depth exchange on international migration and development issues which are of system-wide concern, in view of the high level meeting that the UN General Assembly will convene on this matter next October.
The Director-General will participate tomorrow in the CEB “Retreat” which will be mainly devoted to the post-2015 development agenda and the MDGs implementation at the country level.
