Women, Water Disasters and Education at forefront of Director-General’s visit to New York

UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, is in New York from 4 to 6 March 2013.



She will take part in a number of events within the framework of the 57th Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), including the opening plenary session, two UNESCO side events on “Prevention of Gender-based violence through Education” and “Safety of Women Journalists”, as well as a CSW side event entitled “From resolution to elimination: Plans to intensify efforts for the elimination of female genital mutilations”. She will also participate in a joint Executive Directors Forum on “Ending Violence against Women and Girls”, an event that will bring together a number of UN heads of agencies.

The Director-General will take part also in the first high-level event at the UN dedicated to the issue of water and disasters, organized by the UN Secretary-General Advisory Board on Water and Sanitation (UNSGAB) and the High Level Expert Panel on Water and Disaster (HLEP/UNSGAB).The opening session of the event, entitled “UN Special Thematic Session on Water and Disasters”, will take place in the presence of UN Secretary-General, Ban Ki-moon, the President of the UN General Assembly, Vuk Jeremic, Honorary President of UNSGAB, HIH Crown Prince of Japan, the Prince of Orange, the Netherlands, Chair of UNSGAB, HRH Willem-Alexander and the Founding Chair of HLEP/UNSGAB.


The Director-General will co-chair a panel discussion entitled “Experience and Lessons of Water and Disasters” with the Secretary-General of the World Meteorological Organization, Michel Jarraud. This panel discussion will bring together High-level expert officials who have had broad experience in addressing disasters to share their experiences and lessons on how governments should prepare for large-scale water disasters, including droughts.


Irina Bokova will also take part in a briefing on the Global Thematic Consultation on Education in the Post 2015 Development Agenda, at the invitation of the permanent Delegations of the Republic of Senegal and Canada, where she is invited as a keynote speaker to share lessons on education since 2000.


During her visit to New York, the Director-General will launch the exhibition “Journeys to School”, dedicated to children around the world who, despite all challenges, find their way to school. The exhibition is the result of collaboration between UNESCO, VEOLIA TRANSDEV and Sipa Press, and the launch will take place in the presence of Ban Ki-moon, Jean-Marc Janaillac, Chief Executive Officer of VEOLIA TRANSDEV and Olivier Megean, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of SIPA PRESS. After New York, the exhibition will travel for three years, until 2015. It arrives at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris in April 2013, before it goes on its world tour.
