UNESCO’s Office in Rabat launches this week a series of activities in partnership with the Moroccan Ministry of Education to integrate Media and Information Literacy (MIL) into the Moroccan national teacher-training curriculum.

The programme aims to help Moroccan citizens more effectively engage with media and the Internet and to develop critical competencies in using information by placing Media and Information Literacy in the formal national school curricula.

The programme will kick off tomorrow with a workshop to prepare a Moroccan adaptation of the UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Curriculum for Teachers. The workshop will bring together national teacher-trainers at the secondary level from different fields, such as history, computer science and music, as well as experts from the Centre de Liaison de l’Enseignement et des Médias d’Information (CLEMI) based in Paris. It will take place from 18 to 20 September 2012 at the National Training and Meeting Centre of Takadoum in Rabat.

The workshop is organized in the context of the reform of the teacher-training curriculum in Morocco and as part of UNESCO’s global action to promote an enabling environment for freedom of expression in the Arab region, a project funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida). Media and Information Literacy has become critically important in Morocco since the adoption of its new constitution in 2011, in which articles 25 and 27 guarantee freedom of expression and freedom of information.
